Who’s behind Speaker Box?
Marcus Lovell, renowned Bristol-based DJ, is the founder and chief turntablist at Speaker Box.
Marcus’ love for music stems back to his school days in the Eighties, when he and his friends used to share round mix tapes from parties held by Bristol’s legendary DJ crews, The Wild Bunch (now Massive Attack), FBI and Def Con.
The Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, Soul and Reggae music he was hearing on the tapes inspired him to start buying records, and the mixing made him want to learn to DJ himself. He saved and saved to buy his first pair of Technics 1200 turntables and three weeks later was playing his first house party. Suffice to say, he’s never looked back.
Marcus’ Djing career has seen him win DJ competitions, support a number of international bands, lay down scratches for recording artists, present a Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul and Rare Groove radio show, and take up residencies and regular guest spots at nightclubs in and around Bristol.
At the Dojo nightclub, Marcus was part of the team responsible for the club’s longest running and most successful Hip Hop, Funk, R&B and Soul night, which included residences with Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Snowboy and Jody Wisternoff (Way Out West), who all remain some of Marcus’ DJ heroes. He also got to play sets with some of the DJs he used to listen to at school, including Daddy Gee from Massive Attack.
During this busy time, Marcus also played his first wedding – for a Bristol-based TV actor – which quickly led to more private parties and weddings for international music industry moguls, sporting legends and members of the national media industry. The time was right to turn his passion into a business and Speaker Box was born.

Besides my many years of professional experience as a DJ, I bring a passion for getting parties started (and rocking all night long) to every event I play at. DJing is what I love to do, and I’m happiest when I see a jumping dance floor in front of me and a sea of happy faces loving the tunes that have been selected for them.
